We live in a time of shortage of resources, changes in climate, the necessity of feeding a continuously growing world population and the increasing cultivation of renewable resources. One result of this current situation is that proper plant breeding has become a top priority. SAATEN-UNION GmbH was founded in 1965 and is an association of seven medium-sized plant-breeding enterprises with more than 100 years of breeding experience behind them. We make energy-efficient and healthy varieties of seeds available for all European crop-growing areas. The secret of our success is our practical down-to-earth experience, our technological leadership and an unparalleled genetic range of more than 40 agricultural grain varieties. Exchange of know-how means greater know-how SAATEN-UNION has cash crops but also a large variety of grains specially adapted to particular regions. Our company takes the know-how of the most diverse areas and combines them efficiently with each other. It makes use of modern genetics to achieve an expanded and sustainable crop rotation. SAATEN-UNION partners are well known for their plant breeding innovations, for example, the development of robust hybrid varieties or the different climate-resistant grains developed for our European latitudes. SAATEN-UNION's strategy is to concentrate at each breeding station on a few intensively treated plant varieties. Rape, peas as well as hybrid and standard ryes are bred and treated together in cooperation with special partners and in our own associated companies. Biotechnology for farmers, consumers and environment Plant breeding and the technology related to it, such as that of the double haploid or the marker-supported selection, are among the most important key technologies of our day. What is important is the benefit for the farmer and for the consumer, on the premise of a sustainable production. Our goal is, with the help of new technologies, to develop still greater crop yields, even healthier and higher quality varieties. SAATEN-UNION now has one of the biggest and most advanced biotechnological laboratories for plant breeding in Germany and so we are well equipped for the future. From professionals for professionals The SAATEN-UNION partners are themselves actively involved in farming. The result of their practical everyday experience is the development of varieties which fulfill their highest agricultural expectations. A unique European testing network is available to SAATEN-UNION breeders and makes it additionally possible for them to provide the suitable variety for each and every crop-growing condition. Located throughout Europe At SAATEN-UNION our variety policy, our distribution to and communication with the customer are all conveniently found in one enterprise. An innovative product management optimizes the development of our varieties and serves as a link between breeding and marketing. In Germany we have 14 agricultural experts who work full-time for us as consultants and 30 farmers who serve as special advisors for their fellow-farmers in their locality. In Europe SAATEN-UNION has eight subsidiaries — one each in Great Britain, France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Russia — and since 2009 in Ukraine, active as an umbrella brand. In other countries we have sales agreements in cooperation with certain companies. We also have a sales cooperation with RAPOOL Ring GmbH and its subsidiaries. And there is a sales agreement for varieties offered by HYBRO Saatzucht GmbH & Co. KG. All of these have made an important contribution towards strengthening the position of SAATEN-UNION in the seed market. In the SAATEN-UNION group there are 780 employees across Europe, 70 of whom work in our headquarters in Isernhagen, Germany. Thanks to its decentralized structure, our European-oriented enterprise, with each of its partners' know-how, is able to develop local markets and be of service to them. The dynamic development in sales on all of the very diverse European markets shows us that our concept is the right one. Our logo, "Züchtung ist Zukunft" (Breeding for the future) determines our strategy because seeds are the most basic elements for supplying people with a healthy variety of food and with renewable resources. We want to make our contribution in shaping the future in a responsible and sustainable way. We are working today on the plant varieties of tomorrow. My name is Inge Stoldt. I am in charge of the laboratory at Hybro and support the hybrid rye seed production management. I love to be in nature. I love nature, natural food and particularly enjoy rye bread. Hybro is a specialised hybrid rye breeder and markets the seeds through SAATEN-UNION. We have breeding stations in Kleptow and here in Wulfsode, and intensively work towards our aim of promoting the breeding progress to the farmers. Quality assurance is one of our central topics. The entire harvest is tested here in Wulfrode and we also run many testing stations in Germany and Europe, and also a modern seed processing plant in Kleptow. We offer the farmers the best yielding hybrid seeds on the market our turbo hybrids of the latest generation and that fills me with just a little pride. I am Inge Stoldt – and we are SAATEN-UNION.
My name is Gero Heumann and I am in charge at SAATEN-UNION for sales and merchandising planning of seeds, and for managing key accounts in Eastern Germany. When my young family leaves me any time, I like to do sports or follow my other great passion - hunting. If you want to be a successful hunter, you need mainly patience and you have to be able to assess the situation correctly when it counts. Similar demands are placed on me during production planning in the cereals department. As cereals are planted outdoors as we all know, we always have to plan a year in advance. The challenge is to balance demand and production regardless of those many unknown factors that can occur throughout a vegetation period. This can only be managed through market assessment in the most precise way possible, combined with close alignment with our customers. During a sales season, my colleagues and I move several thousand tonnes of seeds during a very short time span to customers at home and abroad. Timely delivery can only be assured by intensive communication with our partner companies and the logistics partners. The key account management in Eastern Germany is performed in collaboration with my colleagues from regional sales consultancy. We must be able to fulfil the individual customer demands on time and in my opinion, even in times of most modern communication paths, the personal communication is irreplaceable. I am Gero Heumann – and we are SAATEN-UNION.
My name is Franz Unterforsthuber and I am the consulting sales representative for SAATEN-UNION in the area of Southern Bavaria. I do sports as compensation and due to my closeness of the Alps I like to be in the mountains - no matter whether it is summer or winter, on skis or on foot. I love the superb views, the wide panorama and the quietness - no mobiles, no noise, no strenuous discussions, time to free the head while exercising the body. Many good ideas came to me during those moments. This recharges my batteries. The requirements placed on us sales consultants at SAATEN-UNION are very diverse due to the wide range of products for many agricultural crops. It starts at cereals, to rape and legumes, to maize and beets down to grasses and intercrops. Exactly that makes our task so interesting. We develop the varieties that are on the market together with our colleagues at the head office, the breeding centres and the SAATEN-UNION experimental station. We develop farming concepts and support our trading partners during the sales processes of our products. We are points of contact for trade, consultation and farmers for varieties and consultation of production technology. This wide field and the contact to people make it highly interesting to do this job for SAATEN-UNION. I am Franz Unterforsthuber – and we are SAATEN-UNION.
I am Stefan Kontowski and the head of the European wheat breeders at Borries-Eckendorf. We offer the best varieties for the European farmers in the SAATEN-UNION network. My hobby is my motorbike and this is mirrored in my job by through the need to always give the best under changing environmental conditions. When driving this means concentrating while moving; on the breeding plot it means selecting the best varieties for our farmers. The focus for our 6 wheat breeders at Borries-Eckendorf is always the requirements set by our farmers. Our team uses every opportunity to develop the best varieties every year. With that, we currently have the 4 best high yielding varieties in the German Descriptive Varieties List. And we are proud of this! Besides our large German breeding programme, we have further breeding programmes for England, France, Poland, and Middle and Eastern Europe. For these, we utilise a large network of own testing stations and many further experimental sites in Germany and Europe. To fulfil the future requirements for new varieties, we also use the most modern methods in addition to the classical breeding in the field. For this reason, SAATEN-UNION operates a joint laboratory in Hoevedissen and Gatersleben. This networks the mid-sized companies very well and positions them successfully for the future. We’re crazy about wheat. I am Stefan Kontowski – and we are SAATEN-UNION.
My name is Xaver Zellner and I am the head of the SAATEN-UNION Experimental Station Bavaria in Grünseiboldsdorf near Moosburg. When I have the opportunity to be out and about in nature, I love hiking in the mountains with my wife or we go cycling. I like to get up early and use this time to free my head and begin the day with replenished energy. The constantly up-to-date weather data and soil moisture values are our daily tools for checking, documentation purposes and decision making. In our station, the data streams are strongly networked - Controlling is an important element of our daily work. Our station is an agricultural testing station and we are part of SAATEN-UNION. We drill and harvest approximately 25 different types of crop over 300 hectares of arable land. The majority of our 50,000 test plots are used for variety development for our partners. We closely collaborate with science through various projects. We directly transfer the latest findings from this to the practical work of plant breeding and variety testing. Using this procedure, here in Moosburg we contribute to the highest efficiency in the breeding progress. And for this, we have a team of highly motivated and well trained colleagues. I am Xaver Zellner – and we are SAATEN-UNION.
My name is Tom Peters. I am head of the goods department at the partner P. H. PETERSEN. In this function, I lead a team of 15 persons and make it possible for more than 10,000 tonnes of seeds to arrive in time and in good quality at the customers. I am married and dad of two children and, as is typical in the North, a huge handball fan. And if you want to be successful while handball playing, what you mainly need is: team spirit, talent for organisation und good player qualities. Focus points at P. H. PETERSEN are intercrops, forage plants and cereals. A large part of this production takes place in the climatically best-suited areas in Hungary. For us, close monitoring of the crops goes without saying. We especially make no compromises when it comes to seed quality. For farmers, this is incredibly important from the aspect of plant hygiene. The seeds of the partner P. H. PETERSEN stem from one of the two processing plants in Lundsgaard or Sarbogárd (Hungary). Gentle processing and intensive cleansing guarantee seeds of exceptional quality, with a purity and germination capability that is above the legal standard. And when it comes to speed, we strive to make the ordering process swift and secure for our customers. Most orders already leave the storage unit within 48 hours and are on their way to the customer. Good packaging not only looks good but also protects during transit. The successful market positioning of SAATEN-UNION in the intercrop sector is supported by the combination of intensively monitored production, top varieties in exceptional quality and well thought-through logistics. Simply teamwork! My name is Tom Peters and we are SAATEN-UNION.
To make breeding progress both visible and measurable - that's the challenge of the SAATEN-UNION research farm in Bavarian Moosburg. Production: SAATEN-UNION GmbH Directed by: Oliver Mengershausen Camera: Xaver Zellner, Ralf Bieler Sound & Postproduktion: Ralf Bieler
Biogas can be obtained from a variety of agricultural substrates. Currently research is done to find alternative products for the biogas plant No. 1 - the maize. The cultivation of maize as monoculture poses some disadvantages. On good maize sites only the beet has a similarly high productivity in the field. The cultivation and harvest are somewhat more complex and costly than for maize. Above all, lacking harvesting, cleaning and storage technics were previously reasons why the beet largely was neglected in the biogas production. Modern fodder beet can be harvested with sugar beet harvesters. Depending on the degree of contamination a wet or dry cleaning still must be done afterwards. If the soil is sandy and has relatively little stones, it is probably enough with dry cleaning, as it is integrated with the T7 THYREGOD beet harvester already during the harvesting process. First the top is harvested. After the beets are lifted they run through two cleaning turbines, where the coarsest dirt is already removed. After that they are brushed on two rubber rollers brush the fine dirt and sand. Perpendicular to the direction of the beets there is a steel roller to remove the adherent stones. Then the chopped beets and together with the previously separate sheet put together. The top and the chopped beets can then be stored after the overloading. A maize silage makes up both for mixing the biogas plant, as well as possible for the dairy cattle a year-round use. To this a late silage maize type is needed, that achieves until the end of October between 30 and 35% dry matter content. Alternatively, the beets can be mashed and stored in a a folio tight basin, where they subsequently are getting ensiled and fed through a pump system to the plant. The benefits of fodder beets are obvious: - High biomass yields, - Low soil tare by the smooth skin and abdominal furrow significantly smaller than in sugar beet - High yields in the methane digester. In addition to the biogas production as well as many dairy farmers are interested in the fodder. Many biogas plant operators have recognized the great potential of energy beet. With increasing solutions to the technical challenges the beetwill take the place within in the rotation of energy crops and thus contribute to more diversity on the field.
